Cold start cycling durability of fuel cell stacks for commercial automotive applications

System durability is crucial for the successful commercialization of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) in cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Besides conventional electrochemical cycling during long-term operation, effect operation cold climates must also be considered. Ice formation start up sub-zero conditions may result damage to electrocatalyst layer and membrane (PEM). Here, we conduct accelerated tests on prototype stacks intended incorporation into commercial FCEVs. The this stack performance evaluated, resulting mechanical investigated, degradation mechanisms are proposed. Overall, only a small voltage drop observed after tests, minor occurs layer, no increase gas crossover observed. This indicates that these successfully meet targets automotive applications
